In an abandoned school, I created six murals. Besides my photography skills, some of you might know that I’m also quite skilled at drawing and painting, including street art.
The municipality of Purmerend gave me a unique opportunity to set up a temporary studio in an empty school. This was only temporary, of course, because the entire outdated complex is slated to be replaced by much-needed housing. It all started in the gym, where I made a 3D Eagle and the 3D letters "Progress" are made by Yorkone. Later, in this quiet and spacious environment, I could further hone my skills.
Even though the murals were destined to disappear with the announced demolition, I pulled out all the stops to make the most of the spaces, entirely at my own expense. The combination of the ever-decaying complex, the 'Abandoned Places' photography, and my own murals was utterly fascinating to undertake. The synergy was exceptional. Some people even said it was like having a street art museum in Purmerend, a hotspot of creativity.
I hope that by sharing these photos, you’ll be as excited about the whole series as I am. This project represents another significant step forward in my creative development and is a very fine addition to my body of work.
